Basseterre, St. Kitts, March 27, 2013 (SKNIS): St. Kitts and Nevis has established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Paraguay.
The relevant documents were signed last Friday (March 22), by the OAS Ambassadors/Permanent Representatives Her Excellency Jacinth Henry-Martin on behalf of St. Kitts and Nevis and His Excellency Martin Sannemann for the Republic of Paraguay.
After the signing, a very candid and lively conversation ensued in Spanish. Discussions centered on the real possibilities for collaboration and exchange, and included expressions of interest by Ambassador Sanneman to visit St Kitts and Nevis, along with nationals of his landlocked country, to enjoy the hospitality of our islands.
Ambassador Henry-Martin stated that this as a decidedly important step to deepen existing bonds of friendship, paving the way for more focused attention to collaboration in areas of mutual interest. These range from language instruction, information and technology exchange in the area of small farming and agricultural development to tourism, and cultural exchange.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – St. Kitts and Nevis, Elvis Newton, told SKNIS that this move represents another component of Government’s efforts to form strategic relationships with countries in order to promote mutual interests in the international arena.
He added that a thriving multilateral relationship already exists through membership of both states in the OAS hemispheric family, and explained that the benefits of this new partnership will redound to both populations. Mr. Newton concluded by reaffirming government’s commitment to work with the new allied state to ensure the hemisphere is politically and economically stable.”
The signing ceremony was witnessed by Kemoy Liburd Chow, Counsellor and Alternate Representative of St Kitts and Nevis to the OAS, and Second Secretary Luis Carlos Escobar, Alternate OAS Representative of Paraguay.
