Social assistance recipients, low income families to join health insurance first

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, JANUARY 9TH 2014 (CUOPM) – Persons who are now on the Federal Government’s social assistance programme will be the first clients to become insured when the universal health insurance scheme is rolled out.

Federal Minister of Health, Hon. Marcella Liburd, who has been championing the introduction of the national health insurance scheme, informed her Cabinet on Monday that low-income families will be brought into the system thereafter.

“Ultimately, all persons wishing coverage under the national health insurance scheme will be given an opportunity to do so under an appropriate plan,” said Minister of Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty.

Mr. Carty in presenting the post Cabinet Briefing disclosed that the first phase should commence by the second quarter of 2014 and will redound to the improved quality of life of the nation’s people.
