Media Statement: SKNOC Responds to SKN 100m Sprinter, Kim Collins

Basseterre, St. Kitts, 10 June, 2016: The St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) is aware of the recent video clip with Mr. Kim Collins, posted on Times Caribbean, 7 June 2016 in which he has professed his desire to participate in the Rio Olympics.

The SKNOC warmly congratulates Mr. Collins on achieving his 100m win at the British Athletics Diamond League in Birmingham-UK recently and on all his recent performances. The Committee, however, once again emphasizes its position in this matter as stated previously in correspondence to both Mr. Collins and the Permanent Secretary (Ag) in the Ministry of Sport.

That is, that the SKNOC stands ready to make forward progress on this matter starting with a face to face meeting with Mr. Collins at which time issues can be discussed and concluded. The SKNOC feel it is in everyone’s interest to resolve any issues as speedily as possible, being just one month to the closing date of the qualifying period for Rio 2016.

Currently, we are guided by Mr. Collins’ refusal to meet with the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee while the SKNOC also deeply regrets Mr. Collins’ continuing dispute with SKNOC, a private matter which has been broadcast live from a high-profile athletics event.

In this matter, the Committee once again reminds athletes that compliance of the SKNOC Code of Ethics is a prerequisite to participation in the Games.

On a second point, the Committee would like to bring to athletes’ attention, the guidelines set by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) with particular reference to the below point, i.e.
Achieving the entry standard does not guarantee participation in the Games; the final decision will be taken by the St. Kitts and Nevis Olympic Committee
