Charlestown-Nevis-As Wednesday February 14th was being celebrated around the world as Valentine’s Day, the seniors on Nevis, were being serenaded, as per usual, by the Ministry of Social Development and more specifically, the Department of Social Services’ Seniors’ Division.
This time around, the event was hosted at the Weekend’s Beach Bar, located at Pinney’s Beach and the seniors all had a ‘whale of a time.’
Ag. Coordinator of the Seniors’ division, Mrs. Trudy Prentice, spearheaded the event and delivered opening remarks.
She noted that Valentine’s Day, is a day to celebrate love and urged those present to reach out to their family members, neighbours, friends etc. in love.
She then introduced the chairperson of the day, Mr. Roger Fyfield, who ensured that the program went smoothly.
During his opening remarks, he also dedicated a poem to the seniors.
Mrs. Perkins gave the invocation and the national anthem was played on pan, by Mr. Gavin Patterson.
Poems were also delivered by Ms. Audrey Huggins; Ms. Yvette Mills; Mrs. Eunice Liburd and Mr. Noel Archibald.
The Seniors’ pan ensemble, also delivered two scintillating renditions on pan and the Care Givers wooed the hears of everyone, with their version of ‘Let it be me.’
Also making brief remarks, was Deputy Director of the Social Services department, Miss Joyce Moven, who lauded the seniors on their splendiferous outlook and radiant appearance.
She noted with pleasure, the increase in the number of men and beseeched the women to continue to encourage their senior men folk, to come out and enjoy the activities hosted for their benefit.
She also used the opportunity to thank some of the stakeholders who assisted in making the seniors special day, such a meaningful one.
The featured speaker of the day, was the Hon. Eric Evelyn, Minister of Community Development, who rushed out of a sitting of parliament, to be with his beloved seniors.
He was even attired in a red shirt and red tie, as he said he could not be outdone by the seniors.
He pointed out that every year the seniors seem to be more expensively attired and wondered if they were shopping on line. He then mentioned some of the fashionable hair styles on display.
He too, used the opportunity to urge more senior men, to become a part of the numerous programs and special privileges being offered to the seniors and pledged his government’s continued commitment to the seniors, who would have served the country so well, in their youth.
The afternoon climaxed with a sumptuous luncheon, complements of the staff of the Weekends Beach bar.
