Senator Dr Clarke Reinforces Government’s Strong Commitment to Sustainable Development and Environmental Conservation

Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNIS): In a passionate address to the National Assembly on day two of the 2025 Budget Debate on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, Senator, the Honourable Dr. Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action, and Constituency Empowerment, emphasised the government’s unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and the critical importance of conservation for the future of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Dr. Clarke highlighted the progress made over the past two and a half years, noting the efforts to dismantle outdated systems and replace them with innovative and environmentally conscious practices.

Through various government departments, including the Ministry of Sustainable Development and the Solid Waste Management Corporation, the government has made strides in implementing measures to protect the environment and enhance climate resilience.

From the protection of natural resources to the promotion of rural living and vertical communities, these efforts aim to ensure that the nation remains resilient in the face of climate change and can continue to thrive in the long term.

These initiatives, Dr. Clarke said, are deeply rooted in the realisation that sustainability is not an abstract concept, but a necessity for the livelihoods, health, and well-being of the people.

Dr. Clarke also addressed the importance of engaging the community and fostering partnerships to build a sustainable future. She urged citizens to embrace the transition to a circular economy, which refers to the production and consumption of goods and services that aim to reduce waste and environmental impacts. The reduction of waste and enhanced support for the government’s efforts to maintain a clean and green environment for future generations were also highlighted.
