Rotary Club of Liamuiga Applauds Efforts To Reduce Single-Use Plastic In The Federation

Basseterre, St. Kitts — In commemoration of World Plastic-free July, on Wednesday 28th July, 2021, the Rotary Club of Liamuiga hosted Mrs. Diannille Taylor-Williams of the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council who spoke on the topic, ‘Elimination of Single-use Plastics’.

Mrs. Taylor-Williams asserted that the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis has one of the highest plastic use rates per-capita. She noted that there is a higher incidence of littering in St. Kitts than in Nevis. The top category of plastic litter is bottles followed by bottle covers.

In 2020 the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council developed the, ‘Plastic Be Gone Campaign’ with the aim of increasing awareness of the harmful effects of single-use plastics and to bring about ameliorative change. Some of the objectives of the campaign are to realize a reduction in citizens’ importation of single-use plastic products by 30% in the next 5 years and to increase the use of reusable/compostable alternatives to plastic.

Relying on the success of past initiatives, upcoming initiatives include community/beach clean-ups, panel discussions and, “Plasticade” which is an Island-wide motorcade spreading messages on reducing the use of single-use plastics.

The Rotary Club of Liamuiga applauds and endorses the efforts of the St. Kitts Sustainable Destination Council and calls on all residents to exercise more discretion when opting for single-use plastics.
