The annual Special Olympics games for the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, was held at the Kim Collins
The impressive run past by the security forces, with the torch, signaled the commencement of the event and they were joined by some of the special athletes, as they made their way around the track.
One of the athletes also had the privilege of placing the torch in the center of the field.
This was followed by an equally impressive march past by the athletes, complete with a drum corps.
A brief opening ceremony ensued.
The invocation was delivered by board member, Ms. Nadine Natta and the welcoming remarks were given by National Director, Mr. Ivor Blake.
One of the athletes also entertained on the African drum and this was followed by the feature address, delivered by Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Mr. Vincent Hodge, who congratulated the organizers of the event and saluted the athletes, as being all winners.
He then officially declared the meet open.
There was also the impressive flag raising, conducted by two members of the security forces; the athletes’ oath, done by three representatives of the athletes and the officials’ oath, presented by Mr. Edwin Warner.
The athletes then got on the track and excited the small but appreciative gathering in the 50 meters walk and then the sixty meters flat race.
Unfortunately, thereafter, intermittent showers took over, to dampen the proceedings.
An early lunch was taken and then medals were presented to the athletes who had already qualified for same.
Today, Thursday 3rd May, the action moves over to Nevis, where the athletes will compete in a BOCCE competition. This will start at 9.30 am at the court situated at the CBIS.
It is understood that the swimming competition will be held on Saturday 5th May.
