Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNIS): The Honourable Dr Terrance Drew, Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, delivered a compelling call to action for global leaders, organisations, and institutions to unite in pursuit of a sustainable future for both current and future generations.
During his address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA79) on Friday, September 27, 2024, Dr. Drew emphasizsed imseveral critical themes. He noted that the Caribbean is experiencing “rising tides washing away our hopes” and “unforgiving heat setting ablaze our dreams.” Dr. Drew highlighted the interconnectedness of security and sustainability, stressing that security is more than an absence of conflict; it must reflect the presence of dignity, justice, and hope.
The Prime Minister also mentioned the success of the Caribbean-led Argyle Declaration, which helped de-escalate tensions between Guyana and Venezuela. He emphasizesed the importance of engagement through dialogue and cooperation and reiterated the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) call for an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. Dr. Drew also commended the work of the National Transitional Council in Haiti, which is striving to find a peaceful political solution to end gang violence.
Furthermore, Dr Drew highlighted his government’s work to transform St. Kitts and Nevis into a sustainable island state guided by seven pillars: Water Security, Energy Transition, Food Security, Sustainable Industry, Sustainable Settlements, Circular Economy, and Social Protection. Key projects on this journey include the construction of renewable energy desalination plants, building a modern climate-smart hospital, boosting local food production, and promoting lifelong learning as the key to national development.
In his concluding remarks, Prime Minister Dr. Drew urged global leaders, industry heads, problem solvers, and critical thinkers at UNGA79 to come together and advocate for a peaceful future marked by justice, sustainability, and hope.
