NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (July 04, 2013) — Assistant Commissioner of Police responsible for the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force Nevis Division Robert Liburd, assured Nevisians that the Police would do all it could to keep the Culturama Festivities and the community safe and had planned to bring in reinforcements from sister isle St. Kitts.
He was at the time responding to concerns of safety and security during the upcoming season when he was a guest on a special edition of Voice of Nevis (VON) Radio’s weekly “Let’s Talk” programme on July 04, 2013 on the heels of a spate of violent crimes on the island.
“Let me assure you, that during the Culturama period we will have extra security to ensure the events are kept very safe and the community on a whole is kept secured. It is my plan and we have already begun to put those plans together, to get more people over from St. Kitts to bolster the numbers that we have here. I’ll also have personnel from the Defence Force.
“It was only this afternoon that I spoke to Captain Kayode [Sutton] and I will make formal request to the Commander, that I want to have the Defence Force here for two straight weeks starting on the [July] 25th and so they will take us right over to the 7th of August,” he said.
A caller to the show had enquired of the Police plans that would allay fears about attending nightly functions during the island’s key Cultural festival. Only two days before the island recorded its eighth murder for the year with an overall total of 18 so far in St. Kitts and Nevis.
