Permanent Representative of St. Kitts and Nevis Addresses UN Security Council as CARICOM Caucus Chair

On July 3, 2024, Dr. Mutryce Williams, the Permanent Representative of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations, spoke at the United Nations Security Council in her capacity as Chair of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Caucus for July and August. Dr. Williams addressed the Security Council and discussed the situation in Haiti. She mentioned the progress made in strengthening governance by officially appointing the Transitional Presidential Council and Transitional Prime Minister, Dr. Gary Conille, along with his Cabinet.

Dr. Williams also raised concerns about the ongoing violent gang activity in Haiti, emphasizing the importance of addressing this issue for stability in the country. She acknowledged the deployment of police officers from Kenya to Haiti as part of the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission and called for accelerated efforts and concrete actions from the international community to support Haiti in establishing stronger democratic institutions and restoring peace, stability, and prosperity.

Dr. Williams also emphasized the humanitarian situation in Haiti, including the underfunding of the 2024 Humanitarian Response Plan, food insecurity, its impact on children, as well as the incidence of sexual violence and recruitment of children by gangs. She concluded by reaffirming CARICOM’s support for Haiti and thanked all stakeholders for their assistance.
