Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), often called the “silent epidemic”, are a major global concern.
Even though they are common, NCDs are usually not detected or treated.
Globally, NCDs are linked to around 71 per cent of all deaths.
The worldwide alarm has long been triggered, to protect vulnerable population groups against prevalent NCD risk factors.
We need to stamp out physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, and unhealthy diets.
This fight goes beyond the health sector- it requires broad intersectoral responses.
The Ministry of Sport, with funding and support from UNESCO and the Commonwealth Secretariat, has developed a comprehensive National Sports
Policy and associated Strategic Plan.
The vision is to: promote a healthy, active population benefitting from physical education and enjoying quality sports, physical activity and recreation in a thriving sports sector.
The National Sport Plan will, when successfully implemented, have long-term strategic implications, most notably in reducing mortality rates, heart conditions, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and obesity by promoting healthy lifestyles, and thereby improving health outcomes – this has significant long-term financial implications for St. Kitts and Nevis.
To this end, we are embarking on an awareness and sensitizing “blitz” to bolster our position.
