Charlestown, Nevis – After serving as a teacher in her early work life and then as a Nurse for over 35 years, Nurse Sylvia Ward was given some of her due flowers, while she is yet alive. This was done at a ceremony held in her honour, on the occasion of her 86th birthday.
The event was held on Saturday 3rd August, at the St. Paul’s Anglican church conference room.
The proceedings were ably chaired by her Godson and current cabinet Secretary in the Nevis Island Administration, Mr. Steadman Tross. The invocation was done by Mr. Ralph Ottley and a wonderful dance item was rendered by Ms. Eulone Pemberton.
A number of persons offered remarks of appreciation and commendation to Nurse Ward and her exemplary community work, which extended beyond her service as a Nurse, but also included her commitment to church and community in general.
These included: Her sister, Her Honour Mrs. Hyleta Liburd; Pastor Marcia Tomlinson; Mrs. Seneca Dias; Mr. Steadman Tross, Mr. Ira Hanley and Dr.Chandy Jacobs.
Minister of Social Development, Hon. Eric Evelyn also presented the celebrant with a fruit basket, complements of his Ministry and the City Drug Store. Minister Evelyn commended Nurse Ward for her service to the Nevisian community and beyond.
Nurse Ward, in her response, thanked all responsible for the wonderful surprise birthday party and thanked God for enabling her to live for such an extended period.
The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Vaden Mills, whose wife Thelma, received special praise for coordinating the entire event and the Cox Stringband and a DJ, closed out the evening with some wonderful musical renditions.
