CALIFORNIA, United States, Tuesday May 7, 2013 – The ongoing feud between Trinidad-born rapper Nicki Minaj and American pop diva Mariah Carey flared up again last week when the two “American Idol” stars unleashed their claws at the judge’s table and the R&B hit maker took a swipe at burning the hip-hop queen by hissing that she had never hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
The “Pink Friday” girl lost no time in retaliating to the catty remark and spat right back, taking to Twitter after the show to blast Carey as an insecure woman who feels threatened by Minaj’s success on the charts – among other things.
“Bwaha! Burn? Shes sad i tied her record for Hot 100 entries in only 3 years of being in the game. Yep, a black female rapper @perezhilton,” Minaj tweeted.
And that was before the “Beez in the Trap” star swung into full stinging mode.
“What u SHOULD be doing (wit your messy ass) is asking why a woman SO successful at her age, is still so INSECURE, and bitter,” she added.
Taking a final rake at the object of her disaffection, the rainbow-haired rapper revelled in the rumours that “American Idol” producers were looking to revitalise the show by bringing popular former judge Jennifer Lopez back on the panel next season in place of Carey.
“All dem #1s [Carey] but J.Lo phone ringin? Lol. I guess having a personality, being a secure woman and giving genuine critique still trumps that,” the T&T-born star tweeted.
The tensions between Minaj and Carey are nothing new and seem to have been simmering since the pair, along with country singer Keith Urban, joined “Idol” as judges in September for the12th season after the departures of megastar Jennifer Lopez and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler.
Minaj, one of the hottest voices in rap and hip-hop, and Carey, with more than 200 million album sales to her credit, were expected to have breathed new life into the show, which last year lost its eight-year reign as the most-watched show on American TV.
From the outset, the two hitmakers didn’t appear to be each other’s biggest fans, however, and a video of the pair arguing at early auditions last autumn was leaked online.
Minaj, moreover, was reported to have said “If I had a gun, I would shoot that bitch” – an allegation that the singer-songwriter flatly denies.
For her part, 42-year-old Carey, who is reportedly being paid US$18 million to be an “Idol” judge, told Barbara Walters in an ABC News interview that she had hired more security following threats allegedly made against her by Minaj last year.
And for the cat’s miaow, it now appears that Jennifer Lopez will be appearing in this month’s “Idol” finale.
