A large number of chemicals and agricultural inputs that were deemed ‘scarce’ on the island were made available to farmers and backyard gardeners at the Department of Agriculture, LaGuerite, St. Kitts as of Friday, 3rd March 2023.
The offloading of chemicals from one shipping container was done at the Department’s grounds on Friday morning and follows the delivery of two containers worth of animal feed and veterinary medicine the week prior.
This comes just four weeks after the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Marine Resources and Cooperatives made a commitment to swiftly resolve the agricultural inputs, feed and chemical shortages that have been affecting farmers in recent times.
In February, Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Miguel Flemming stated that it was the Ministry’s stakeholder-led consultations with farmers that revealed the urgency of the matter and prompted the government’s immediate response to ensure that animal feed, chemicals and farm supplies are distributed more consistently.
Some of the agricultural products that were brought in include, CARISTA, DIURON 80%, SELECT 12 and BASAGRAN.
Farmers are asked to contact the department at 467-1831or 467-1841 for further product information. Offices are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
