(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- The Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court of Justice, Nevis Circuit was abuzz with excitement today Tuesday, April 14, 2015 as the April 2015 Criminal Assizes commenced before Her Ladyship Justice Lorraine Williams.
This morning twelve persons who were all accused of committing various crimes in the Federation of St. Christopher and Nevis took the docket and made their pleas before Madame Williams.
Tomorrow, Wednesday, April 15, 2015 Veon Sutton will be the first accused to have his case tried before a 12 member jury panel. Today in court, Sutton pleaded not guilty to the charges of wounding with intent and unlawful and maliciously wounding Doreen Sutton-Moses of Low Street on September 27, 2013.
Also standing in the docket was Geoffery Romany. Romany pleaded guilty to fraudulent conversion and money laundering. He admitted that sometime between April 2, 2008 and April 10, 2012 at Charlestown, having received U.S. $161,598.00 belonging to Vector Gardner, he used the money for his own personal use.
A fixed date was set for sentencing on April 28, 2015. He is being represented by Dr. Henry Browne, QC.
Dominican Republic national, Guillermo Santana who has been incarcerated at Her Majesty’s Prison also made an appearance in court today. Santana has been remanded after he inflicted wounds to now deceased Cesar Pabel Santana with a machete. However, Santana was unable to make his plea since his main language is not English. The court ordered an interpreter for Santana.
The case against Asim Parris, Dexter Somersall and Craig Halliday who were charged with the 2008 murder of Leon ‘Gravo’ Westerman was adjourned until later in the assizes.
The case against Jerome Kelvin Williams, who was accused of strangling 18 year old Chazere Davis to death, was also adjourned until a later date.
A number of sexual offences ranging from unlawful carnal knowledge to rape are also on the list. These matters too were adjourned until later in the assizes. The accused persons in these matters pleaded not guilty to the charges.
