Ministry of Environment and The Solid Waste Management Corporation Warn Against Illegal Dumping in Independence Square

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The Ministry of Environment, Climate Action and Constituency Empowerment and The Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) are issuing a stern warning to citizens and residents, specifically businesses in the vicinity of the Independence Square, regarding the illegal dumping of waste in and around this vital public area. Such actions are not only unlawful but also have severe consequences for the environment, public health, and the nation’s quality of life.

Independence Square is a central hub for social, cultural, economic and recreational activities. It is a historical feature within the greater Basseterre setting, and this must be preserved.

The presence of illegally disposed waste undermines the beauty of the Square, poses health risks, and diminishes its appeal of historical significance for residents and visitors alike. Additionally, as St Kitts and Nevis commence the tourist season, such unsightly practices can have unintended consequences on tourism revenue, impacting our nation’s economic stability.

The SWMC reminds everyone that litter wardens are actively monitoring, investigating and reporting instances of illegal dumping. Businesses and individuals found in violation will face strict penalties as prescribed under the Solid Waste Management Act, 2009. The SWMC takes this matter very seriously and will not hesitate to enforce the law to its fullest extent.

The Ministry and the SWMC appeal to all residents to uphold their responsibility to keep our environment clean and safe. The Minister with responsibility for the Environment and SWMC, Hon Dr Joyelle Clarke, explained how disheartening and unsafe the practice is and noted that the Square is a central point for many cruise visitors.

Minister Clarke said, “The garbage is unsightly, unhealthy, unsafe and threatens not only our health but the visitor’s experience. The Ministry is aware that a clean environment is critical for a thriving tourism sector, which in turn supports thousands of livelihoods. We implore the businesses and park users to support the efforts to keep the Square clean.”

General Manager of the SWMC, Nelvin Maynard, said that it is unfair for a few to tarnish the efforts of the community and the sacrifices made to maintain The Independence Square as a welcoming public space for all.

He said, “Let us work together to preserve this cherished location for ourselves and for the many visitors who come to enjoy our beautiful island.”

The Ministry and the SWMC remain committed to the goal of ensuring proper waste management across the island, and both count on the cooperation of every individual and business in carrying out this mandate.
