Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNIS): High school students across St. Kitts are learning more about the government’s efforts to transform St. Kitts and Nevis into a Sustainable Island State.
Minister of State responsible for Youth Empowerment, the Honourable Isalean Phillip, is sharing the government’s vision as she interacts with the students during a new initiative dubbed: The Minister’s Caravan. The Minister’s Caravan will take the minister of state and other officials from the Department of Youth Empowerment to various schools where they will discuss the SIS and other related issues affecting young people.
The interactive engagement began on Tuesday (November 14, 2023) at the Washington Archibald High School where students from the secondary school joined with peers from the Basseterre High School. Minister of State Phillip shared critical information on the United Nation’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be achieved by the year 2023. She mentioned the focus of the government is to improve conditions related to people and the planet to bring about prosperity.
The students learnt how the Ministry of Sustainable Development under the leadership of the Honourable Dr. Joyelle Clarke is spearheading the charge to implement the SDGs. Efforts by other ministries such as the Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Public Utilities, and more were also discussed.
The minister of state was also able to answer questions raised about efforts to reduce carbon emissions, enhance recycling and waste management, and increase renewable energy.
The Minister’s Caravan continued on Wednesday and ends on Thursday, November 16. The discussions conclude on Friday, November 17, with the hosting of the Minister’s Youth Forum at the CUNA Conference Centre.
