Basseterre, St. Kitts (SKNIS): Minister of Sports, the Honourable Samal Duggins, said he is focused on furthering the development of cricket within the Federation.
Speaking after the recently concluded Caribbean Premier League’s (CPL) games at the Warner Park Cricket Stadium in St. Kitts, Minister Duggins spoke about his vision for cricket within the Federation during his appearance on the popular radio and television show ‘In Focus’ on August 30.
“What we are doing with the sport of cricket starts with making sure that we have adequate venues because, without the proper facilities, we believe that our people are limited,” he said.
“Beyond that, we are going to the schools because we recognize, that for us to get what we need out of society in terms of cricket’s development, we have to get right down to the core which is the young people,” Minister Duggins added.
He said that it is part of his mandate to bring sports back into the schools because of its absence over the past years.
He also congratulated the Minister of Education for sharing his vision and collaborating on the joint venture of bringing sports back into the schools.
“From our term which begins in another few days, I believe that we will see an upsurge in sporting activities back in the schools including cricket,” Minister Duggins said.
He also stated that his Ministry is currently collaborating with the local organization to ensure that more cricket games are played in St. Kitts.
“We have been working with a number of cricket clubs in the UK in particular so that we can have exchanges and different matches so our people can partake in while also having some of our people venture over to their clubs to be a part of cricket there as well,” he said.
