Man accused of having sexual intercourse with minor found not guilty by jurors

(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- A Gingerland resident walked out the Charlestown High Court on Wednesday, April 22, 2015 a free man after a 12 member jury panel found him not guilty.

The case against the accused began on Monday, April 20, 2015. Earlier in the assizes he pleaded not guilty to the charge against him. The accused was charged with unlawful carnal knowledge. It was reported that the accused in the matter had sexual intercourse with a minor under the age of 16. At the time of the incident the underage female was 12 years and 5 months old. The incident is said to have occurred on May 8, 2013 at Hardtimes, Gingerland.

The Prosecution called seven (7) witnesses to give evidence against the accused including the victim. The accused was unrepresented by legal counsel. He took the oath and gave evidence in his own defense. He also called one witness to give evidence on his behalf.

Jurors presiding over the matter listened to the evidence given before the court and returned with a not guilty verdict against the accused shortly after 12:00 noon on Wednesday.

Today, Thursday, April 23, 2015 lawyers who are representing Asim Parris, Dexter Somersall and Craig Halliday who are all charged with the murder of Leon ‘Gravo’ Westerman are addressing the court as to why there should not be a trial against the defendants.
