LOW-SCORING AFFAIRS marked the start of the regional women’s T20 Blaze yesterday at the Providence Stadium in Barbados.
The women were playing regional cricket for the first time in two years, beginning with three games.
The Barbados women began with a win after they scored 86 all out but stifled the Guyana women, to leave them stranded on 79-9 from their 20 overs.
Thirty-five from 44 deliveries from Hayley Matthews led the way for Barbados against 3-11 from Guyana’s Cherry-Ann Fraser. There were also two wickets apiece for Asmini Munisar (2-17), Mandy Mangru (2-13), and Kaysia Schultz (2-7).
In reply, Guyana leaned on the experience of Shemaine Campbelle, whose 33 from 38 deliveries was not enough against Shakera Selman (3-26) and Aaliya Alleyne (3-18).
Jamaica’s women were the only team who seemed to get somewhere near to what looked like a competitive score on day one of the Blaze, getting to 133-6 from their 20 overs in their games against Trinidad and Tobago.
The Jamaicans benefited from some remarkable hitting from Chinelle Henry, who scored the first half-century of the competition, racking up 52 from 38 deliveries with seven fours after Narasha McLean with 30 from 27 had got the Jamaicans off to a good start.
The score was well out of the reach of Trinidad and Tobago, who were skittled out for 55 in just 13 overs.
The disaster for Trinidad and Tobago came courtesy of a remarkable spell of five for eight from Naisha-Ann Waisome. Henry would return to chip in with 2-20 from three overs.
