July 11, 2013 (Times Caribbean):- Kim Collins’ phenomenal season continues with yet another impressive run this time in Budapest, Hungary at the Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix . The 37 year old World Sprint Legend ran a scorching 9.99 seconds ahead of Jamaicans Kemar Bailey Cole (10.07) and Jacques Harvey (10.18).
This was the 2nd sub 10 performance in as many races for Kim Collins, who is also referred to as “Living Legend”, and makes him the first Master (35 years and over) sprinter to run two back to back sub 10 second races with his 9.97 seconds on the weekend and yesterday’s 9.99 seconds. Kim’s weekend race in Lausuanne, Switzerland put him in the record books as he equaled the World Masters Record for the 100m with his 9.97 seconds run to place 4th in the fastest race for the season. A race which was won by Tyson Gay in 9.79 seconds followed by Asafa Powell in 9.84 seconds and Collins in 9.97 seconds.
Collins has in the last week run 2 of his three fastest career times at an age that is considered geriatric in the World of Athletics.
After his World Masters Record and New national record run over the weekend Collins called on his country’s athletic federation to “be the bigger man” and reach out and bury the hatchet . Collins and his Olympic Federation are at odds since Collins was axed from the country’s Olympic team at the London Olympics while on the verge of making history by being the first sprinter to compete in 5 Olympics. His infraction was an unauthorized rendez-vous with his wife and coach. Paula Surgeon-Collins. He can make history again if his country’s athletic federation includes him in their IAAF World Championship team as he would be competing in his 10th World Championship. His inclusion will also enable the country to field their best possible relay team and defend their bronze medal performance from Daegu. With Collins now running the best times of his career and two other young athletes in Antoine Adams and Jason Rogers who are both running just over 10 seconds the St.Kitts-Nevis relay team, if Collins is included, can easily make the finals and can have an excellent chance of at least successfully defending their bronze medal. However without Kim it is highly unlikely the team will be able to duplicate their Daegu success.
