(CHARLESTOWN NEVIS)-Caribbean Health and Education Foundation (CHEF) in collaboration with the Nevis Renal Society and the Kidney Trust Foundation conducted a two-day Chronic Kidney screening on the island of Nevis.
During an interview with Mr. Odell Bussue, who is the Founder and President of (CHEF) told this media house that screening was carried out in Nevis on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 March 2014 and thereafter, they will journey over to the neighboring island of St. Kitts. He said he was elated to be here as a Nevisian and to contribute to his country and the building of the healthcare infrastructure.
He noted that he was extremely happy, that the screening was able to take place despite the obstacles they encountered. He indicated, “We have a very good turnout from the public, many persons have been screened thus far and all the persons who have received screening have expressed their gratitude and appreciation”. The President claimed that after the screening is concluded, they are optimistic that the data will be analyzed and a report will be produced to the Health Ministries to make them aware of exactly what is happening in our country.
He noted that Chronic Kidney Disease is a serious issue and since all of us are at risk, symptoms should never be ignored. Bussue continued, “We have to address this and it is of paramount importance we do address it in order to turn the tide and roll back this disease since a number of persons have perished at the hands of renal failure on the island”. In conclusion Mr. Bussue indicated that there is no way people should be dying in the 21st century from this disease since it can be prevented.
President of the Nevis Renal Society, Mrs. Alexa Pemberton, noted that approximately nine hundred and fifty (950) persons turned out to be screened. She also stated that she was very impressed with the numbers and those who made it possible should be highly commended.
