Hazel Byron, a resident of Bath Village, recently passed away and a significant number of people attended her funeral service to pay their respects. Hazel was born on November 8th, 1972, in Bath Village, Nevis.
She had to face various health challenges associated with Down’s syndrome from an early age. Despite her struggles, she displayed exceptional determination and resilience that helped her achieve great things.
Hazel’s greatest achievement came in 1987 when she was only 14 years old. She made history as the first Special Olympics gold medalist from St. Kitts and Nevis at the 1987 Special Olympics World Summer Games held in South Bend, Indiana. Hazel’s remarkable feat included winning three gold medals and a bronze, which remains unmatched in the nation’s sporting history.
