(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- The scene can be aptly described in one word, ‘Despicable!’
Manager at the Nevis Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), Mr. Andrew Hendrickson, on Wednesday, June 24, 2015 pointed out to media personnel an illegal dumping site, smack in the middle of a road in the upscale housing area at Pinneys Estate, known as Nugent’s Heights.
The area in question is located immediately opposite the popular entertainment spot know as ‘Occasions’.
You do not have to travel far onto the paved road. As you approach a roundabout, which is incidentally overgrown with shrubs, you are faced with the unsightly scene: Somebody or bodies would have taken time out to take a variety of waste materials (Refuse) and dumped them right there in the road.
The waste materials include but are not limited to: A computer; one cricket pad; shoes; pieces of galvanize; a freezer; a stove; a washing machine; part of a bed and several more items.
‘I am really hurt,’ declared Hendrickson. ‘We do a lot of educational programs and the members of the general public are aware that there is only one legitimate site on the island for the dumping of Refuse and that is at the Sanitary Landfill, located at Long point. It is not fair that they just expect us to clean up after them,’ he lamented.
The good news is though, that employees at the NSWMA were able to get two names of known persons within the community that were attached to some of the materials. Hendrickson indicated that he will be working in collaboration with the Environmental Health office to ensure that the guilty persons are prosecuted to the full extent of the law.
He also used the opportunity to urge all right thinking citizens to ensure that their Refuse actually end up at the Sanitary landfill and nowhere else.
