(CHARLESTOWN,NEVIS)- “Atrocious! Unbelievable! They should be fined”, were some of the comments that were made at a site in the Pinneys area on Wednesday, April 22, 2015.
A group of volunteers had collaborated efforts to clear an illegal dumping site that had been recently discovered in the bushes in the vicinity of the Pinneys Beach.
The team of volunteers was led by Mrs. Miriam Knhorr and a number of expatriates, ably assisted by Sixth Form students who are a part of the Dynamic Community Minded Group named simply BOCTS (Building our community through service).
President of the group, Doodnauth Sardu, indicated that once they had learnt of the situation, the group immediately decided to assist with the cleanup efforts, which were significantly conducted on April 22, the day designated as EARTH DAY worldwide.
He noted that his group was involved in such clean up campaigns, mentoring other students and visits to the Nursing homes etc.
Another member of the youthful group, Miss Whitney Glasford, used the opportunity to appeal to members of the general public to desist from littering and asked for assistance of more volunteers in similar clean up campaigns: ‘Even one hour a day, is good,’ she stated.
Mrs. Miriam Knhorr for her part and a number of the expats present expressed disgust at their findings. Some of the items removed in the over three truck loads taken to the Sanitary landfill located at Long Point, included: Toilet bowls; Shopping carts from a certain supermarket; used stoves; refrigerators; washing machines; used engines; Household garbage, among other things.
Also on hand to assist with the coordination of the commendable effort, were Mr. Andrew Hendrickson, newly appointed Manager at the Nevis Solid Waste management Authority and Mr. Rudy Browne, Operations Manager at the Landfill.
Both men applauded the efforts of the volunteers and indicated that the Authority was giving full support to the clean up campaign by providing the trucks and speedily removing the waste to the Landfill.
They are now looking at putting certain measures in place in order to prevent a recurrence of such a situation and are appealing to the members of the general public to be more conscientious in terms of their waste disposal habits and to do the right thing, and take their waste materials to the single designated site on the island for such materials, which is the Sanitary landfill at Long point.
