Beryl is now a Category 3 storm, with maximum winds of 125 mph, the National Hurricane Center said in its 2 a.m. ET update.
After slamming Jamaica, the storm is 110 miles southeast of Grand Cayman and is expected to bring dangerous storm surge and damaging waves across the Cayman Islands late Thursday into Friday.
“Some weakening is forecast during the next day or two, however, Beryl is forecast to be at or near major hurricane intensity while it passes by the Cayman Islands,” the centre said.
“Additional weakening is expected thereafter, though Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane until it makes landfall on the Yucatan Peninsula Friday.”
