Hon Marcella Liburd urges supporters to fight fire with love

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (February 16, 2015) — Following a failed attempt of arson directed on her recently opened campaign office on Cayon Street early Monday morning (February 16), member of Parliament for Central Basseterre Hon Marcella Liburd is calling on her constituents to remain focused on their mission today.

A section of the office that was destroyed by fire.

“It is time for us to be strong,” Hon Liburd told party supporters who had assembled outside the campaign office shortly after 5:00 in the morning. “Please do not focus on what has taken place. Our focus must be winning today. If we focus on these things, it is what the enemy wants – for us to become distracted.”

Reports of a fire inside the office came shortly after 4:00 am in the morning, and Fire and Rescue Services quickly responded and put out the fire which had scorched a section of the office, destroying campaign material meant for the candidate’s agents. As persons came to find out what was happening, they were prevented from entering the building as forensic officers were yet to arrive.

“Focus on what we did yesterday in our training and let us go forward to do what we have to do to return a victory today,” said Hon Liburd as she addressed her supporters and agents shortly after 5:00 am this morning.

“Let us not get distracted and let us not fight fire with fire. Fight fire with love. Let us get focused on what we are supposed to do today. If you want to be fired up about anything, be fired up about winning. Now it is the time to be fired about winning. Important thing is to get out to vote. So if you want to get fired up make sure that everybody in the streets, everybody in their house, everybody in the community get out today.”

She led her agents and supporters in repeating the words: “Let us remain focused.”

According to an official of the St. Kitts and Nevis Labour Party Constituency Number Two branch, reports are that an intruder had gained entrance to the building through the neighbouring yard, used a ladder and broke a window to one of the toilets and got into the office.

“There was one individual inside the building, so, if he did not wake up the whole building might have been destroyed,” said the official. “The person said he saw one individual wearing a sort of a black mask over his face. It was sometime after 4 am. They even broke the door to Marcella private office, they threw gas all over but because there was someone there, he did not get to light inside the office.”
