Friday January 16, 2015 marked another historic day in the political history of St. Kitts and Nevis. The Denzil Douglas government tried all trickery to change the electoral boundaries in this twelfth hour when elections are constitutional due within the next 90 days.
First, the Constituency Boundaries Commission met to finalize the Boundaries Report and three out of five Members signed it at 3:45pm on Friday. After the said meeting that was concluded at about 4.05pm, Lawyer Vincent “Juicy” Byron who is a member of the Constituency Boundaries Commission and also a Senator and also a senator 4.05pm, Lawyer Juicy Bryon who is a member of the commission and also a senator in Parliament Are very much in Parliament was handed a notice for an emergency sitting of the House of Assembly for 3.45pm. This of course flies in the face of all normal parliamentary procedures.
While the Parliament was sitting, our legal team led by Chris Hamel-Smith had an audience with the resident Judge, Justice Marlene Carter, who heard an application for an injunction to halt the proclamation by the Governor General of the boundaries report. The injunction was granted and a copy of the injunction was served on Attorney General Jason Hamilton,as legal representative of the Governor General, as directed by the learned Judge. The Judge’s order takes full effect and is in force from the time it was made. The Judge ordered a follow up hearing to be scheduled for next Thursday 22nd January when Her Ladyship will hear full arguments regarding the constitutionality and validity of the Boundaries Report. This matter has serious regional implications as the Court’s final ruling can have enormous repercussions within the justice system and on the issue of the separation of powers between the executive branch and the judiciary.
Dr. Douglas is very much aware that the people of St Kitts and Nevis are tired of his corrupt leadership. His actions yesterday are in line with his usual autocratic leadership style, one that fraudulently attempts to alter the landscape of our democracy at the expense of political justice and liberty for all our people.
We the leaders of Team Unity will continue the fight for justice and truth in our land of beauty where peace abounds. We will continue to exercise patience and peace that surpassessber and or email adcdress all understanding. The fight for freedom lies at the door step of every citizen of St. Kitts and Nevis. It is also very fitting that the culmination of this matter of injustice falls on the heels of this coming week celebration of the memories of one of the most dynamic freedom fighter in our western hemisphere and prolific civil right leader, Dr. Martin Luther King who once said “I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. That is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant”.
The time is drawing near when the reality of that change; the change in government that we so long parliamentary procedures.
for, becomes the new era of restoring democracy and promoting prosperity. Change is coming now. And now we are ready to change the destiny of our nation. We are on that chartered course; continue the journey of courageous men and women who will not be denied their Justice nor their Liberty.
destiny of our nation. .
