Guyanese cricketer Leon Johnson has announced that he will be retiring from first-class cricket at the end of the fifth round of the Cricket West Indies Four Day Regional Tournament.
Johnson,35, is currently leading the Guyana Jaguars as they seek their 12th regional title.
Johnson’s career highlights include nine Test and six ODI appearances for the West Indies. He has amassed over 400 test runs and over 6,000 first-class runs.
Guyanese have reacted to news of Johnson’s retirement by thanking him for his efforts.
“You served with distinction! All the best moving forward,” one person wrote.
President Dr. Mohammed Irfaan Ali commented: “Retirement is not the end, it is just moving into another phase of talent. I want to personally congratulate Leon Johnson as one of cricket’s greatest ambassadors. Sportsmanship, discipline, leadership, commitment, selflessness and good character are attributes brought to the game through his conduct.
