Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 02, 2015 (SKNIS): The Government of National Unity intends to pursue constitutional reform as a part of its governance agenda. Speaking on the Government’s radio and television programme “Working for You” on November 25, Attorney General, the Honourable Vincent Byron Jr., explained that the Team Unity Alliance had campaigned on the basis of restoring democracy to the Federation.
He explained that this journey of restoring democracy meant that “the Government of National Unity will be working to establish good governance and so for us a good governance agenda means restructuring the very fundamental goods in this country.”
Attorney General Byron is of the view that the Government should not only seek to be accountable to the people at election time but this is important at all times. Citing the introduction of such legislation as the Freedom of Information Bill, the Protection of data (Privacy Bill), the Tenure of Office of the Prime Minister Bill and the Integrity of Public Life Bill, the attorney general noted that the Government has already made significant progress in achieving the good governance agenda.
According to the attorney general, constitutional reform is also imperative in the process to restore democracy. He revealed that the Government intends “to look at the constitution and will be embarking on constitutional reform that would have at the centre of it electoral reform changing various electoral processes.
Attorney General Byron explained that before the February 16th general elections the Team Unity Alliance had battled against the deterioration of democracy in the Federation and vowed that the Government will ensure that measures are in place so that never again would the people of St. Kitts and Nevis be forced to suffer the ramifications of reckless governance.
