Government of National Unity honours war heroes on Remembrance Day

Basseterre, St. Kitts, November 09, 2015 (SKNIS)—The men and women in uniform, including the St. Kitts Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) and the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF); dignitaries of state, including the Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris and His Excellency the Governor-General, Mr. Tapley Seaton Q.C.;  and Members of the Diplomatic Corps, paid tribute to the great men who gave their lives in the Greats Wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-45.

The solemn event at the War Memorial in Basseterre on November 8 included a Remembrance Day parade and an interdenominational religious service in honour of the 26 men who gave their lives in service of their country. The SKNDF Band accompanied the throng of persons gathered to pay their respects as songs such as “I vow to thee my country”, “O God our help in ages past” and “Be still and know” were sung. Scripture passages were read from Psalms 78: 1-7 and Thessalonians 4:13-18.

The interdenominational religious service was led by leaders of the Moravian Church, the Anglican Church, the Evangelical Association, the Salvation Army and the Moravian Church.

In recognizing those who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country, wreaths were laid by His Excellency the Governor General, the Honourable Prime Minister, a British Representative, the President, Ex-Servicemen’s Legion, British Commonwealth Ex-Services League, the Commander of the Defense Forces, the Commissioner of Police, the Fire Chief, the Uniformed Bodies (Nurses, Red Cross, St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, Scouts, Guides, Boys’ Brigade, Girls’ Brigade, 4-H, Pathfinders, Traffic Wardens, Project Strong) and Members of the General Public.
