(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- Another male from Gingerland, Nevis was sentenced to Her Majesty Prison on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at the District ‘C’ Magistrate Court by Her Honor, Magistrate Yasmine Clarke. This was after he was convicted on larceny charges.

Kenville Merchant of Clay Ghaut appeared before the court and pleaded guilty to two counts of larceny. The twenty-two year old was charged with stealing one (1) Stihl weed-wacker valued at $2000.00 from the property of James Dore on January 1, 2013. He was also charged with stealing £90.00, 1 Nokia phone, one bottle perfume and one gold and silver necklace with a pendant. The items all totaled $904.00 ECD. The items were stolen from Dore’s Clay Ghaut residence.

On March 4, 2013 a report was made at the Gingerland Police Station by James Dore about the missing items. Constable Trevin Mills investigated the matter which led to the defendant, Kenville Merchant.

When questioned by the Magistrate why he broke into Dore’s home, Merchant replied, ‘I didn’t willfully go into his house but I needed some money to buy some things’. To this Her Honor replied, ‘a young boy like you, why are you going around stealing? You are able to go out and work’.

Mr. Dore stood in court and said that he was trying to help the young lad. He stated that he would give him whatever he had to eat in an effort to keep him out of trouble.

After reading his antecedence, it was disclosed that the young lad was just released from prison late last year 2012, and he was now on his third conviction.

Magistrate Clarke told Merchant that Mr. Dore trusted him. She told Merchant that Dore was trying to help him and he turned around and bit the hand that fed him.

Merchant was then sentenced to twelve months for each count. His sentences will run consecutively. Merchant will therefore spend the next two years behind prison bars.
