With much pomp and ceremony, former Nevis, Leeward Islands, Combined islands and President’s X1 opening batsman, Vance Winkworth Amory, was laid to rest on Saturday 30th April.
He was honoured with a state funeral, due to his major contributions to the development of Nevis and to some extent St. Kitts, as an Educator, Banker, Politician, Premier, and in more recent times, Ambassador in the office of the Prime Minister.
Among those attending the funeral service, were: the President of the Leeward Islands Cricket Association, Enoch Lewis; President of the Nevis Cricket Association, Carlisle Powell and many cricketers who would have played with him or on opposing teams, over the years.
Those interviewed spoke to his obvious skill and talent as an opening batsman. His fleetness of foot; his grace and style.
Some even ventured to say that he was hard done by, at a point when he should have been selected to the West Indies Cricket team. He got as far as the President’s X1, in a match where he performed creditably.
Born May 22nd, 1949, Amory’s first-class average reads:
35 matches; 63 innings; 2 not outs; 1,416 runs; the highest score of 88; an average of 23.21; scored 7 half-centuries and took 29 catches, as he was also a superb fielder.
His body was laid to rest at the St. George’s Anglican Church cemetery, very close to the resting place of a much younger man who he mentored-Runako Morton.
