Five sporting women on Nevis, received special honours, on International women’s day-Monday 8th March.
In an impressive ceremony, held at the Jessups Community Center, the following women, received awards, for their contribution in sports:
Lydia Thompson-Claxton (Netball); Govanie Manners-Hendrickson (club development); Meritzer Williams (Athletics); Theresa TERRI Andrews (Special Olympics and Swim to win) and Wanda Parry-France (Basketball)
The event was coordinated by the Ministry of Sports, through the Youth and Sports Department.
The Jessups Community Center was decked out, befitting for the queens who were being honoured.
The proceedings were ably chaired by Mrs. Trecia Daniel, who also did the invocation and provided opening and closing remarks.
The national anthem was wonderfully rendered by Miss Shavonne Maynard, on the pan and Mrs. Nicole Parris used her powerful voice to salute the women in song.
The feature address was jointly delivered by recent graduates of the GC Foster College in Jamaica—Miss Siana Leader and Miss Kerisha Powell, who spoke to the limitations formerly placed on women in sports, but pointed to the fact that despite all of the negatives, women are excelling in their sports of choice.
An audio presentation expressing congratulations to the deserving women was also done, which featured the voices of King Astro; Hon. Hazel Brandy-Williams; Hon. Eric Evelyn and Permanent Secretary, Keith Glasgow.
Hon. Eric Evelyn in a brief address, also singled out the five women as ultimate stars, as he reviewed their specific contribution to sports on Nevis.
The presentation of awards was conducted by Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Social Development, Miss D. Michelle Liburd and the Hon. Eric Evelyn
The vote of thanks was delivered by Mrs. Shelly Liburd.
