Fathers’ Day Domino Competition aims to foster Parent-Child relationships

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (JUNE 12, 2013) — In celebration of Fathers’ Day 2013, which will be on June 16, the Gender Affairs Division of the Department of Social Services will host a Father-Son Domino Knock-out Competition from 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2013 at the Mandela Community Centre at Cole Hill.

The matches will consist of several categories, namely, “Father and Son,” “Father versus Son” and individual singles. Trophies will be awarded to the winners. Prizes will also be given for the first person or team to sign up and the oldest and youngest players.

Gender Affairs officer Shelly Liburd, who is one of the co-ordinators, said this is the second such event organised by the division “to assist fathers and sons to bond and have better relationships.”

“It’s not the first time. It was done last year, not in the form of a domino competition but, in the form of a luncheon,” she said.

Liburd further stated that individuals can register for the domino competition at the Social Services Department, located at Lower Park Range, Charlestown, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. on weekdays or on the day of the event, at the Mandela Community Centre at Cole Hill.

Another co-ordinator, counsellor at the Gender Affairs Division Ivorcia Hanley, encouraged the general public to support the function.

“You do not have to be a father-and-a-son duo but if you are a young man and you have an older man in the community that is your mentor, then you can also register for the competition. It’s just a fun time for the fathers here on Nevis to do something that they love while being able to win something in return,” Hanley said, stressing that it is a bonding experience for the entire family.

“We’re inviting the whole family to come and watch men do what they love to do a lot that we see around Nevis and that’s play dominoes.”

A special invitation is extended to all domino lovers to be active participants in this meaningful event.
