(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)– The Dominican Republic national, Alexander Diaz who had been evading the police for some four weeks was finally brought before the District ‘C’ Magistrate Court on Tuesday, January 27, 2015.
In court on Tuesday, Diaz, who was charged with the murder of Cesar Pabel Santana, appeared before Her Honor, Magistrate Yasmine Clarke and was remanded to prison until his case is ready to be heard.
Diaz, a resident of Bath Village, Nevis, was also charged with two counts of wounding. Information reaching this media house indicates that Diaz is alleged to have wounded three persons at Enrique’s Bar on Sunday, December 21, 2014, including the deceased, Santana.
Since the incident, Diaz managed to evade the police. He was finally captured on Sunday, January 18, 2015 while attempting to smuggle out of Nevis to St. Maarten along with two nationals of Jamaica. Police later charged Diaz for the murder of his fellow national, Pabel Santana who at the time of the incident was residing at Stoney Grove, Nevis.
Santana succumbed to his injuries some six days after the incident. It is alleged that the knife that was used to stab Santana broke and remained in his back. It is further alleged that when police arrived on the scene Santana told the officers that he could not feel his legs. He and the other injured persons in the altercation were transported to the Alexandra Hospital. Santana also received medical treatment in St. Kitts at the JNF General Hospital.
Nevispages understands that the two Jamaicans who were apprehended with Diaz were sent back to Jamaica.
Diaz is now the second person who has been remanded to prison in relations to Santana. Another Dominican Republic native was sometime last year remanded to prison after he inflicted wounds to Santana with a machete.
Santana was the fifth person to be murdered in Nevis for 2014.
