The man who has been credited as being a forerunner in making the sport of BODY BUILDING, take root on the island of Nevis, Desmond ‘Bull’ Liburd, passed away quietly at 3.30 am on Monday 29th August, at the Alexandra hospital.
He had been fighting a debilitating illness for quite some time now and finally succumbed.
‘Bull,’ as he was fondly called, indicated in a previous interview, that he fell in love with the sport while he was residing in Anguilla and on his return to Nevis, established the popular ‘BULL’S GYM.’
This was a definite first on Nevis and over the years has attracted quite a number of muscle men and women.
Such was the interest level that ‘BULL’ also held several body Building shows, which served to show off the skills of his gym members
He also assisted in preparing the athletes for local and regional competitions and even assisted in preparing local queen participants for their various shows.
Older brother and former Asst. Commissioner of Police, Joseph Liburd, noted that ‘Bull’ will be sorely missed and stated that he will treasure the memories of the powerful muscle man that his brother had developed into, rather than the frail body of more recent times.
He also pointed out that after ‘BULL’ received the diagnosis from his doctor, he took it in good spirits and told his family members not to worry about him, as he had already made peace with his God.
Funeral arrangements are being finalized.
