Department of Environment Hosts First Session of Single-Use Plastic Consultation Meeting SKNISEditor by SKNISEditor March 26, 2025

Basseterre, St. Kitts – The Department of Environment held the first of two public consultation meetings on the federation’s Single-Use Plastics Ban on Tuesday, March 25, at the CUNA Conference Center. The session brought together stakeholders from government agencies, the private sector, environmental groups, and the general public to discuss the details, updates, and public concerns regarding the Single-Use Plastic Ban, facilitating a smooth transition.

The timing of this consultation meeting was significant, especially following the passing of the Single-Use Plastic Ban in Parliament on Friday, March 21. It underscored the importance of stakeholder engagement and public awareness in our mission toward sustainability. Attendees participated in productive discussions about the potential impacts of single-use plastic restrictions, viable alternatives, and policy recommendations to support businesses and consumers during this transition.

Hon. Dr Joyelle Clarke, Minister of Environment, who spoke at the event, emphasized the need for collective action, stating, “The fight against plastic pollution requires collaboration at all levels. No one can tackle plastic pollution alone in our mission toward sustainability. That is why these consultations are critical in shaping policies that are both effective and equitable, ensuring a greener future for St. Kitts and Nevis.”

The second session of consultations is scheduled for Friday, March 28, at the NEMA’s Building Conference Room. This session provides an additional opportunity for public input before the finalization of recommendations. The Department of Environment invites all interested parties to participate and contribute to this important initiative. Your insights and feedback are invaluable as we work towards our goals.
