Charlestown –Nevis-Their main purpose, was simply to say THANKS.
So, on Wednesday 7th March, the members of the Nevis Literary and Debating society, held a press briefing at the Sixth form College, to publicly say thanks to their many corporate and individual sponsors, who helped to make their recent trip to Anguilla, in order for them to participate in the annual Leeward Islands debating competition, a reality.
The brief ceremony was ably chaired by President of the society, Miss Vincia Gumbs, who gave an outline as to the executive makeup of the society and their recent endeavours at fund raising and also a brief overview of their trip to Anguilla.
Principals of the Charlestown Secondary School, Mr. Juan Williams, spoke on behalf of the Director of the Sixth from college, Mrs. Pamela Pemberton, who was unavoidably absent and thanked the many sponsors for ensuring that the team was able to not only participate in this year’s competition, but more importantly, to win and effectively successfully defend the title they won last year.
Staff sponsor of the debating team, Mr. Anselm Caines, in his remarks, spoke of the rough road to success, starting with the uncertainty as to whether or not the competition was on for this year.
He also spoke of the sleepless nights, the long hours of practice and the discipline that was required for the team to be successful.
He emphatically indicated that Nevis will win again next year and noted that the preparations have already started.
The many corporate sponsors who helped to make the trip possible, were then given certificates of appreciation.
