The Barbados-based regional examinations body has launched an investigation into reports that the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Mathematics paper that was written on Wednesday, was leaked.
The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) said it is aware of the concerns that the Maths 02 paper was leaked and that it has started to probe the matter.
“The matter is of grave concern to us, and we have commenced our investigations and will make a definitive statement once the investigation is completed. In the meantime, candidates can rest assured that this matter is being treated with the highest urgency,” CXC stated.
In a swift response to the possible breach, the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU) questioned the effectiveness of the security of the system.
“The reported issue of the leakage of the contents of the CXC Maths paper today, Wednesday, is a very serious one that brings into question the efficacy of the security measures that CXC and any involved territories have in place,” BSTU president Mary Redman told Barbados TODAY.
“Teachers and students have worked hard to prepare for these exams and setbacks like these prove very stressful for all concerned,” she argued.
The union leader contended that this is not the first time such an incident has happened.
“The costs incurred in addressing breaches of this type are not only financial and certainly, more effective systems must be put in place to prevent such occurrences,” she suggested.
President of the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT) Rudy Lovell said “CXC must, and should do better.”
However, Lovell said his union would await correspondence from the regional exam body on the reported breach, before commenting further.
