Real name: Harvey Stapleton but he also carried the popular sobriquet—PUMBY BOY, among other names.
Stapleton, who hails from Brown Hill Village in Nevis, exhibited his talents as a well-rounded cricketer, during his early teen years.
He was a stodgy left handed batsman and a crafty spin bowler, who bowled a wide variety of deliveries and utilized his flight and guile to virtually embarrass the opposing batsmen, as many times, they were left helplessly down the track.
In an interview with Sportscaster Curtis Morton, in 2013, he indicated that he made it to the Nevis trials at age 16 and every year after that, until he was finally selected to the Nevis senior team, at age 19.
He claimed that he was hard done by, despite the fact that he never gave up his wicket easily and was a top-class bowler.
However, his real claim to fame, occurred in a Leewards Islands matchup between St. Kitts and the USVI, when he completely bamboozled the St. Kitts team, to claim all ten wickets in an innings, establishing a record in the process.
That line up included the great Luther Kelly and Junie Mitchum.
He refutes the rumour that he asked the last man to go down to bat so he could get the 11th wicket.
“People only say that to make a good story”, he said laughing.
Since his return to Nevis, it was an established fact that the once great cricketer was having some mental issues.
On Saturday 4th June, according to reports, the record holder ran into some difficulty in the waters close to the Charlestown pier and drowned.
Scores of individuals have since extended condolences to the family of the great man.
