(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- Despite being absent for eight years from the calypso arena, that did not impede Bhingi from returning with a ‘bang’ for 2013 and in the process making himself known as one of the best calypsonians to ever emerge from the island of Nevis.
On Saturday, August 11, 2013 Carlisle ‘Bhingi’ Pemberton was able to capture a spot in the top three competitors while competing in the Leeward Islands Calypso Competition 2013 in Landsome Bowl, Anguilla. Even though he did not capture the crown, Bhingi placed second runner up making him only the second Nevisian to ever place in the contest, the first is veteran King Meeko who placed first runner up.
Bhingi performed one of his oldest tunes ‘Life for the Poor Man’ in the first round; and his new popular song ‘SIDF Money’ in the second round. It is the view that Bhingi’s performance was the best and it is in the opinion of spectators that he should have been crowned King. However, Nevispages understands that some of judges did not understand what was meant by the term ‘SIDF Money’.
Bhingi was defeated by Patrick ‘Solijah’ Farrell of Spectrum Band fame from the U.S. Virgin Islands. This would be the first time in the competition’s 17 year history that the Leeward Islands Calypso crown will travel to the U.S. Virgin Islands. He gave a great performance singing ‘Sing Solijah, Sing’ in the first round, and ‘Look What We Come To’ in the second round and secured the victory.
Meanwhile the first runner up position went to Jerome ‘Ranger’ Vanterpool who is a native of St. Kitts but represented Anguilla on the night of the competition. His two pieces were ‘When will we be Paid’ and ‘World of Turmoil’.
Bhingi was crowned King in the just concluded Senior Calypso Monarch competition for Culturama 39. He was also placed second runner up in St. Kitts versus Nevis ‘Best of the Best Kaiso Bacchanal’ also part of Culturama 39.
