Alexandra Hospital gifted with an ambulance; fleet expands to 4

NIA CHARLESTOWN NEVIS (January 23, 2018) — The Alexandra Hospital now boasts a fleet of four ambulances for health care service to the people of Nevis. A gift from His Excellency Sir Kutayba Alghanim, Consul General to St. Kitts and Nevis in New York on January 19, 2018, brought the number to four, the highest number ever attached to Nevis’ main health facility.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Mark Brantley, who is also Premier of Nevis and Minister of Health in the Nevis Island Administration, presented the keys to the new ambulance to Dr. Cardell Rawlins, Medical Chief of Staff at the Alexandra Hospital. Mr. Brantley it as a significant event.

“This is for me a very important occasion because an ambulance is a critical piece of equipment in the delivery of health care and we are all about delivering better health care to the people of Nevis…

“We are delighted we are at a stage where we have four ambulances available to us; available to the people of Nevis. This gives the [Emergency Medical Service] EMS, we feel, a better ability to respond and to respond in a good fashion…The ambulance is in mint condition,” he said.

The health minister expressed hope that those who utilise the ambulance to deliver quality health care to the public would take the best possible care of the new equipment.

Mr. Brantley noted that the ambulance was one of two gifted to the Federation by Sir Alghanim, a friend to St. Kitts and Nevis for many years, through the instrumentality of His Excellency Kevin Isaac, the Federation’s High Commissioner in London.

Meantime, Ms. Marlene Jeffers, Assistant Hospital Administrator, expressed gratitude to the benefactor on behalf of the hospital.

She said one way in which they administer quality health care is through the Emergency Medical Service (EMS). Therefore, the health facility has to be equipped with the appropriate means of transportation to do so.

Mrs. Aldris Pemberton-Dias, Matron at the Alexandra Hospital, said it is always their focus to do continuous quality improvements there and the additional ambulance would help in achieving that goal.

She gave the assurance that those assigned to work with the ambulance would exercise care and safety as best they could in the interest of the Alexandra Hospital’s patients and clients on Nevis.

Other remarks were delivered by Mrs. Shelisa Martin-Clarke, Acting Permanent Secretary and Health Planner in the Ministry of Health on Nevis.

Also witnessing the handing over was Mrs. Jessica Scarborough, Assistant Matron.
