A Tribute to Former Premier Vance Amory

St. Kitts and Nevis are mourning the loss of a great man. Former Premier Vance Amory was a person of intelligence, resourcefulness, determination, and service. I am sure we all feel this loss deeply.

I would like to thank Former Premier Vance Amory for his many years of public service and his dedication to creating a brighter and better St. Kitts and Nevis. I must also note the strong ties between the U.S. Virgin Islands and Mr. Amory.
After applying for and successfully receiving a position in the finance department of the Nevis Island Government, he was then promoted to Permanent Secretary in Finance. These experiences were crucial in influencing his decision to take study leave in September 1986 and further his education at the University of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix campus. It is with great pride that I can say our beautiful territory influenced such an outstanding man.

Mr. Amory’s greatness can be heard both far and wide. He organized a political party, the Concerned Citizens Movement and within 5 years he determined to serve as Premier of Nevis. His work cannot go unnoticed as his accomplishments will forever be memorialized by the Nevis
the airport is named after him.

Mr. Amory and I share a few commonalities, such as our decision to become politicians and our concern for the well-being of youth, but we also share a love of the great sport of cricket. His dedication to this sport shined as he enjoyed playing it for much of his life and became Minister of Sports in the Nevis Islands Administration. His dedication to all his crafts is truly
inspirational.

On behalf of the Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands and my family, I extend my sincerest condolences to the family, friends, co-workers, and supporters of Former Premier Vance Amory. May you all find peace and comfort during this difficult time, and rest in the knowledge that his country was changed for the better because of his leadership.

Senator Javan E. James, Sr.
Legislature of the U.S. Virgin Islands
