A promise made-a promise kept. In 2015 when the seniors division hosted the inaugural seniors’ fun day at the ET Willet Park, one of the speakers at the opening ceremony was the Hon. Wendy Phipps, Minister of state in the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services who had incidentally come to witness the event with a contingent of about forty seniors from St.Kitts.
During her presentation then, she congratulated the Nevis seniors’ division and Mrs. Meredith Amory for the initiative and pledged that she would endeavour to have a similar event in St.Kitts.
Thursday 28th April was the day that saw her dream become a reality when the St.Kitts seniors division hosted a sports and fun day at the Kim Collins stadium.
A contingent of approximately eighty seniors from Nevis, led by Seniors’ division coordinator, Mrs. Garcia Hendrickson and her staff, attended and participated in the event.
Patrice Cairy, Case Manager at the Department of Social Services in St.Kitts indicated that the events for the day included: 40 meters fast walking; lime and spoon; male and female cricket; relays; tug of war; thread the needle; shot put; hula-hoop and domino competitions.
It was not a St.Kitts versus Nevis event. Instead, all of the seniors were placed into separate teams, representing various colours.
Director of Sports on St.Kitts, Anthony Wiltshire, also lauded the efforts of the organizers and noted that the seniors deserved every accolade given to them because of their tremendous contributions to the welfare of their various communities and to the country.
The seniors then took to the track and got totally involved in the various activities and the winners enthusiastically took to the podium to receive their medals, after each event.
The Nevis seniors returned home sometime after 5 pm that day.
