Basseterre, St. Kitts – Ms Ajané Bristol of the Seventh-Day Adventist Primary School has emerged as the Rotary Club of Liamuiga 2015 Primary School Spelling Bee Champion. Ajané outlasted her 19 other competitors during the 11th annual competition held at the ECCB Sir Cecil Jacobs Auditorium on Thursday October 22, 2015.
Each year the Rotary Club of Liamuiga hosts its Primary School Spelling Bee competition for students ages 9-11 as part of its youth service programmes. This year’s competition was tightly contested and saw a mammoth 18 spellers making it to the elimination rounds. Following 4 elimination rounds of spelling, 3 spellers remained and Ajané was able to emerge victorious with the winning spelling of the word “VERSATILITY.”
“Our Club was certainly pleased to have 20 of the approximately 25 primary schools on St Kitts participating in our spelling bee this year,” said Ms Tuffida Stewart, President of the Rotary Club of Liamuiga. “The young students were quite impressive with their spelling skills and we congratulate the parents and teachers for their support and encourage them to continue their extraordinary task of moulding our nation’s young minds.”
All spellers received Rotary Club of Liamuiga certificates of participation and refreshments and goodie bags compliments of RAM’S through their brands Seven Seas and Sun Top. The top 8 spellers also each received EC$50 gift vouchers compliments of TDC Ltd; a Sparkle lunch bag, AquaVita water bottle, AquaVita notepad, pen, a six pack of assorted Sparkle and AquaVita water compliments of St Kitts Bottling Co Ltd; packages of vitamins and juices compliments Seven Seas and Sun Top and water bottles, pens and notebooks compliments of the Insurance Company of the West Indies.
The Spelling Bee Champ Ajané received a Kindle Fire 8 HD tablet with a shock-absorbing case, EC$1000 cash and a lovely trophy. The winning school, Seventh-Day Adventist Primary, received EC$1000 cash and the teacher who worked along with Ajané received cash of EC$500 and gift packages compliments RAM’S and also St Kitts Bottling Co Ltd.
The second place speller Ms Shaiyan Douglas received EC$500, Violet Petty Primary received EC$500 and her teacher received EC$250. The third place speller was Ms Daniah Flemming who received EC$250, Irish Town Primary received EC$250 and her teacher received EC$125.
The Club’s upcoming projects will include sponsorship of one young person to attend the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards in Grenada, refitting of the Beach Allen Primary School Computer Lab with new computers and a server, its annual Christmas Hamper Distribution to the less fortunate, an uplift of the Bay Road Boulevard and the hosting of the Club’s major fundraiser, its Annual New Year’s Charity Ball at Carambola Beach Club on December 31st.
