Nine outstanding citizens awarded for contribution to nation building

Basseterre, St. Kitts, September 16, 2015 (SKNIS)—Nine outstanding citizens were awarded today (September 16) on National Heroes Day for their invaluable contribution and sterling service to national development.

In his National Heroes Day address, Prime Minister Dr. the Honourable Timothy Harris announced the awardees at the wreath-laying ceremony to honour the national heroes at the Sir Robert Llewellyn Memorial Park in St. Paul’s.

Long-standing educator, Washington Archibald, was awarded the star of merit for his contribution in the field of education.

Mr. Richard Caines, former minister of government in the People’s Action Movement (PAM) Administration and businessman, was granted the star of merit for his contribution in the field of business.

Mrs. Marjorie Morton, who served for 26 years in the Nevis Island Administration as clerk and then as president, was bestowed with the star of merit for her contribution in public service.

Mr. Theodore Hobson, who is a Nevisian and Queen’s Counsel, was conferred with the medal of honour for his service in law;

Mr. Maurice Widdowson, owner and founder of Caribelle Batik, was presented with the medal of honour for his contribution in heritage and conservation.

Mrs. Sylvia Garnette was conferred with the medal of honour for her contribution to nursing and healthcare.

Mr. James Hanley, who is well-respected in the area of sports, was given the medal of honour for sports and community service.

Mr. Winston Skeete, owner of the M.V. Mark Twain and M.V. Sea Hustler, was granted the medal of honour for his contribution to sea transportation.

Mr. Ivan Hanley, a policeman of note, was awarded the medal of honour for his contribution to law enforcement.

“I congratulate all of these our fellow citizens whose respective outstanding contributions in the fields of business, nursing, law, nautical matters, heritage matters, law enforcement, governance and sport are being recognized and acknowledged,” Prime Minister Harris said.

“Let their spirit of enterprise, achievement and commitment inspire us to do likewise and in our several capacities as fellow citizens, we must do our part in nation building.  May God continue to bless our people and country,” he added. “A Happy National Heroes Day to all!”
