Astro is first Nevisian to be crowned National Carnival Calypso King- Other Nevisians also victorious

(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- The participants from Nevis who traveled to St. Kitts to participate in the island’s Sugar Mas Carnival 2014 have made the island proud with their outstanding performances throughout the Carnival shows.
On Monday, December 29, 2014 history was made when Oscar ‘Astro’ Browne of Brown Hill Village was crowned 2014/15 Calypso King in St. Kitts. His win saw the second crown won by Nevisians during this year’s festival.
‘Astro’ was able to break the 43 year old record where no Nevisian had ever won the title of National Calypso King. This he successfully accomplished when he sang his way into victory by defeating seven other contenders and making history for himself and the island of Nevis.
His two selections, ‘Flush It’ in the first round and, ‘Carnival Therapy’, in the second secured him the top spot. He gained a total of 802 points. ‘Lady Diva’ placed first runner-up and former five times calypso king, ‘Socrates’ secured the second runner-up position. ‘Queeny G’ took home the third runner- up slot.
The other contenders were Big Lice, who made it to fifth position on 756 points, followed by Richie Buntin on 741 point, Lord Kut with 737 points and Rudder with 713 points.
On Sunday, December 28, 2014 after five tough appearances in Swimwear, Talent, Evening Wear, Interview and National Pride, Nevis’ very own Akiesha Fergus, who was sponsored by Carib Brewery, managed to secure the first runner-up position in the National pageant. Fergus was unable to defeat the newly crowned National Carnival Queen, Tishima Bowne. However, she copped the title for Best National Pride.
In more Sugar Mas’ news, defending Groovy Soca Monarch champion, Delroy ‘Delly Ranks’ Huggins lost his crown to Mr. Bagnal. Mr. Bagnal performed his way to the top and was crowned Groovy Soca Monarch 2014/15 with his song simply titled, “Carnival Boss”. He indeed proved he was a boss when he defeated the other contenders, including Mr. Mention of the Nu Vybz Band, who placed first runner-up and Delly Ranks who placed second runner-up. Mr. Mention outscored Delly Ranks by a mere four points. Nonetheless, Delly Ranks was able to remain in the top three and Nevisians salutes him for a job well done.
The Mighty Sookie from Barnes Ghaut, Nevis was also a winner in this year’s National Carnival. The young lad won his first ever Junior Calypso Monarch Crown in St. Kitts on Tuesday, December 23, 2014. His song, ‘I Pray’ gained him the number one slot. The First Runner-up position went to former Monarch, King Leo, singing ‘Politics and Youth’ while Lady Niah was adjudged the second runner-up.
Nevisians have overwhelmingly expressed how proud they are of the participants from Nevis who have all worked extremely hard and who did their best in National Carnival, Sugar Mas celebrations in St.Kitts. They have all proven themselves to be winners.
