(CHARLESTOWN, NEVIS)- Police officers in Nevis have recently stepped up their presence at the Charlestown pier. This is in a bid to monitor persons who engage in illicit activities on the boat ride between St. Kitts and Nevis.
In court on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 three males from St. Kitts appeared before the District ‘C’ Magistrate Court charged with possession of cannabis to supply to another. These men were apprehended as part of the police operation at the port.
First on the docket was 18 year old Chad Demming of Half Way Tree, St. Kitts. The facts of the case as read by Police Prosecutor, Inspector Trevor Mills are that on March 2, 2013 at about 10:30 a.m. Constable Charles and other officers of the Task Force Unit were on duty on the Charlestown pier. Constable Charles saw the defendant disembark the M.V Carib Breeze looking suspicious. A search was conducted and the officer found one parcel of vegetable material suspected to be marijuana wrapped in blue tape. The drug weighed a total of 118.1 grams.
Her Honor, Yasmine Clarke asked the young lad why he had such a quantity of drugs in his possession. He was fined $2500.00 to be paid in 6 months or serve 6 months imprisonment. She also advised him to leave the drug in St. Kitts when he was coming over to Nevis.
Second to face the Magistrate was 17 year old Hasheem Douglas of St. Paul’s, St. Kitts. He too was ‘busted’ while disembarking the M.V Carib Breeze by Constable Stevens on February 27, 2013.
According to the facts, the Constable saw the defendant leaving the ferry and acting in a suspicious manner. As a result a search was conducted on his person and the officer retrieved four transparent bags containing vegetable material suspected to be cannabis. The drug weighed a total of 436.7 grams.
When questioned about the findings, he replied, ‘Officer I brought it up for somebody’.
He was fined $6000.00 to be paid in 6 months or in default he will serve 12 months in prison.
Lastly to be fined for transporting drugs weighting 342.5 grams to distribute to another was Glenville Dore of Cayon Village, St. Kitts.
On March 2, 2013 at about 8:00 a.m. Constable Charles was on duty at the Charlestown pier along with other police officers of the Task Force Unit when he saw the defendant disembark the M.V Carib Breeze acting suspicious.
The Constable searched the defendant and found 3 transparent plastic bags containing vegetable material suspected to be cannabis.
He was fined $5000.00 to be paid in 6 months or serve 6 months imprisonment.
