It is indeed a strange arrangement but one which highlights a father’s love as he seeks to motivate his son.
It almost has biblical connotations as we reflect on the story of Samson whose strength literally had its base in the fact that he was not supposed to cut his hair.
Well noted Leeward Islands Cricket Administrator, Carlisle Powell has made a pact with his son and current West Indies opening batsman Kieran Powell.
The deal is that neither of the two men will shave again until Kieran scores a century.
The West Indies opener has made at least three well played half centuries thus far in the 2014 regional season but his Dad knows that every single one of them should have been converted into a century.
So as Kieran leads his team in Grenada this weekend versus the Windwards, he may not appear as handsome and smooth as he normally looks, as he will be unshaved until he gets to the coveted landmark.
His Dad ruefully pulls at his bearded face: “I need a shave but I can’t shave until Kieran gets that century, he said.
Not that the Windwards team is planning to be sympathetic. They are fresh from a comprehensive win over Jamaica, with ace bowler Shane Shillingford fresh from an 11 wicket haul in the match.
Kieran will be coming up against some very tough bowlers. If he makes a century against the Windwards, he deserves to enjoy his much anticipated shave.
Lets’ hope for his sake and his dad’s that the pitch does not play a ‘Delilah’ on him.
